mid term submission

The reason I chose all these photos was because I believed that they were the best photos that I took during this photo shoot. I tried to keep all the layouts very simple with just 1 or 2 pictures on each page. for my main two articles I did a little blerp on why people should make it and the ingredients and directions. For my table of contents I put 7 different pages and 1 photo. For my cover page I used 1 photo to cover the whole page and used white writing for the font to show up. I used the same font for the titles of all the pages and for the other writing I used times new roman.

Schedule photo shoot

During our photo shoot we plan on taking photos of different steps of making all the food. We possibly will take photos of us in the store buying the ingredients but I'm not sure we will have room on our page for those photos. We both agreed on having the photo shoot at my house because I have a larger kitchen. We decided on a date and a time for our photo shoot and we aren't sure if we can get all of the food made in on day but we are going to try.

Schedule Interviews and develop question

For my magazine I chose to interview my mother, she is the one who mainly cooks all of our holiday meals. My mom shops, prepares, cooks and serves she does it all. I interviewed her after thanksgiving so that I could leave her alone to cook. I asked my mom 4 questions, what her favorite dish to make is, how long it takes her to prepare for thanksgiving, how many people she cooks for, and what her least favorite dish to make is. I think the answers will be important for my readers because some people don't always cook for a lot of people and some cook for way more that what my mom cooks for. It's also important to see how long takes her to prepare everything.

Flat Plan

My flat plan has 90 pages, there is a variety of food items in my magazine. In my magazine there is different ways to cook the same food for example, I have a bacon covered turkey and a beer fried turkey. I used a variety of food and deserts that aren't always common in the hopes to engage my readers to see that my magazine can be for anyone. There is about a 50/50 split with advertisement and actual articles. If I were to plan the advertisement I would make them close to the ones I saw in previous magazine I researched, I would have cooking appliances, different ingredients and traveling opportunities.

Table of Contents

I decided to take advantage of how much room there is on the table of contents and keep it simple. Not too much information crammed on to the page, but enough for the reader to know what's in the magazine. I have pinned out 6 different articles to show and I plan on using 1 or 2 photos. Personally a crammed page with a lot going on can be very overwhelming and doesn't look very professional. The reason I chose these articles to show is because they are spread out throughout the entire magazine and not just the 3 articles I am actually creating. With this it is my intention to get the reader engaged in the magazine to see there is a variety of different food. I plan on having at least 2 pictures on all the articles and then making small paragraph about what is being made and then the directions on how to make it. I am keeping it simple  by having the fonts all the same for the article title and pages as font Times New Roman and the Table of Contents font as Bodoni MT Black.

Cover Template

For the cover of the magazine we chose to make the title M&D because my name starts with a M and my partners name starts with a D. We included the word holiday into it because we're talking about the holiday time. My cover says the Thanksgiving issue because all my articles involve Thanksgiving food. The fonts we chose aren't final, were waiting till we have the pictures for our cover page but, for the time being our company name and the articles within the magazine are in the font Bodoni MT Black because it was a simple but different font. The words Thanksgiving Issue are in the font Elephant and its in the middle of the magazine. The title is in very large print at the top of the magazine. The articles within the magazine are on the right hand lower side in a smaller size font so they don't take up to much space but still shown.

The fifth magazine I researched was Rachael Ray everyday. Its a Thanksgiving issue titled "It's all gravy & turkey & sides & leftovers!".  This magazine is all about Thanksgiving so its closer to the theme of my magazine. In the magazine they have different recipes for different types of Thanksgiving food. The cover is three slices of turkey with gravy on top, mash potatoes, stuffing and, cranberries sprinkled on top all set on a white plate with a fork next to it. The advertisement in this magazine is on both sides and consists of clothes, houses beauty products and, different ingredients for food. Rachael Ray is a very famous women, she has a television show on cooking as long with her magazines, she's won many awards for her amazing recipes.

Magazine Genre Reseach

The fourth magazine I researched was Living with Martha Stewart. On the cover there was a turkey leg and slices of ham organized neatly surrounded by pomegranates, sliced grapefruit, and leaves on a plate. Beside the pate there is a list of topics the magazine consists of. For example, Like Tastier Turkey, Brighter Side, Prettier Sides, 47 Ideas to get your home holiday ready, and Stuffing Perfecting. All the articles in this magazine help with my magazine because they have the same themes. The advertisement in this magazine are mainly in the odd pages and they advertise cooking utensils as well as ingredients and different types of food. Martha Stewart is extremely popular with a 21 Million responsive subscribers.

Magazine - Genre Research

The third magazine I researched was from Cooking Light. This Magazine main articles were on: fall soups, stews, braises, hearty vegetable bowls, butternut squash lasagna, meatloaf, halloween treats and best ever club sandwich. My theme is about thanksgiving food and they also have articles on different ways to prepare thanksgiving meals. On the cover there is a nicely prepared peppery beef stew and a loaded cauliflower soup in separate bowls next to each other, they are set on a denim blue table cloth. Their advertisement is on both sides of the pages and it also varies on what's on them. They have cooking ingredients, credit cards, beauty products, medications and feminine products. From their advertisements it seems like their target population would be females. Their distribution is 9,360,00.

The second magazine I researched was another Food and Wine. This magazine was the Thanksgiving issue which is closer to the magazine I plan on making. On the cover there is a roasted turkey on a platter surrounded by grapes, apples and Basil leafs on a red table clothe table. The advertise meant in this magazine is mainly on the odd number pages. The advertisement goes from credit cards, traveling, wine and ingredients for food. The articles in the magazine are about how to cook and prepare different types of Thanksgiving food. They have a circulation number of 936,062.

The first magazine I researched was Food and Wine. The cover of the magazine Food & Wine has a white plate with pieces of steak and curly fries and in the background there is a glass of red wine. This Magazine includes a lot of cooking recipes mainly from France but also includes some from northern Thailand.  It also includes different types of wine that go with certain types of meals. Advertisement is mainly found on the odd pages and it consists of wine companies, traveling, credit cards and food.  The magazine is a French Wine issue on the cover it says "71 incredible bottles, 30 classical fall recipes and where to travel and eat in France now." All the wine and food in this particular magazine is from France and most of the advertisement has relations for France. They have a circulation number of 936,062.

Project Selection - My Decision

Ive decided that the magazine project would best fit for me. This way I don't have to rely on a whole group of people or write a script for a film. I will be working with 1 other person which is Delhi, I know that we will work good together because we have the same ideas and characteristics. Delhi and I are both very organized and like things a certain way. For the topic of the magazine we are doing Thanksgiving food recipes and Christmas desert recipes. The reason we want to do this is because we both really enjoy cooking and its our 2 favorite holidays.

Project Selection - Film

I wouldn't like to do the film project because I don't like group work. When doing projects I don't like to rely on others and because of that I end up doing the whole project. I'm a perfectionist I like things very organized and neat. While watching the News room you can see that it takes a lot of people to make sure Will is on the air at the correct time and saying the correct information. I think that if I were to do the film I would be good at organizing it and making sure everyones doing what they're supposed to but, it would be very stress full. I can be bossy when needed but its not my favorite thing to be the boss of people.

Project Selection- Magazine

Print journalism interests me the most because I like to do independent work. Doing a magazine would work better for me in the way that I can decide how my project turns out and I don't have to rely on a group to help me. In the show Newsroom there was a lot of people that helped to get Will on the news to say the correct information, if someone were to mess up the whole chain would be be missing information and the correct news might not have been provided. When doing the magazine analysis I found that a magazine I liked and it was about fishing and being on the water. It had a lot of information about fishing and boats. I think that the magazine project would be a better fit for me because I wouldn't have to choose actors and worry about them remembering lines. I would have to make a whole script and theme for others. One concern I have about the magazine project would be coming up with a theme to make enough pages.
